The Journey to Education
The morning fog greets 43 elementary students who themselves trek 1 to 2 hours daily through dense forests to reach their place of learning. Their commitment to education shines brightly against the backdrop of immense geographical challenges.
“In this quiet corner of the world, only 4 to 6 families live near the school, while over 100 families reside in the neighboring mountains,” explains our guide. “These families depend solely on farming, earning mere hundreds of pesos a day—a struggle for basic survival in a place where resources are scarce.”
Here, electricity remains a luxury few can afford. The digital divide isn’t just a concept—it’s a daily reality.
Isolated but Not Forgotten
Due to nearly impassable roads, local government units and NGOs rarely venture into these areas. The only lifeline connecting this community to the outside world is the ‘Habal-Habal’ motorcycle service, which comes at a premium price given the perilous conditions drivers must navigate.
Yet against these formidable odds, our team remains dedicated to delivering not just packages but hope and encouragement to young minds eager to learn.
Every day, children here embark on journeys spanning 1-2 hours over rocky trails and steep ridges, navigating treacherous terrain with unwavering resolve. Each step demonstrates their extraordinary commitment to education and their dreams of a brighter future.
The Principal Speaks: Essential Needs
The school principal outlined several pressing needs for the students:
“One of the most urgent requirements is warm jackets. The weather can be quite chilly, especially in the mornings. Our children deserve to be warm and comfortable as they learn,” she explains.
Transportation presents another significant challenge, particularly for Boy Scout activities. “It costs around 800 pesos for a round trip on a motorcycle, which only allows one child to travel at a time. We would greatly appreciate help with their uniforms, which are often shared among generations of students.”
The principal also highlighted the community’s athletic potential: “We have young athletes in desperate need of training and equipment. Zamboanga is a primary supplier for players representing our region on national and international stages in sports like Sepak Takraw, athletics, and swimming.”
These young athletes, aged 10-12, need sports supplies including balls, nets, rubber shoes, and socks (particularly in sizes 6-7).
Beyond the Classroom: Community Challenges
The hardships extend beyond education. Due to the remote location, basic necessities are inflated in price. “The cost of rice in the city is around 50 pesos per kilo, but here it can rise to 70 pesos,” the principal notes.
The nutritious food provided by our team was described as “truly a blessing, as it’s not something they have every day.”

As our team concluded their journey, they carried memories and a renewed commitment to support this resilient community. The school plans to assist eight children with Boy Scouts activities and four aspiring athletes.

Together with Karen Isidoro, this core team braved the challenging 3-hour journey through mountainous terrain, demonstrating remarkable determination and compassion.
